I was wondering what advice or "secret tips" you have for achieving a top placement in google. I recently graduated as a comp sci major at University of California, Irvine, so you don't have to worry about using technical terms in your explanations. I would really appreciate learning through your expertise and knowledge.
If I can achieve a top placement on my webpages, I will be forever grateful. I am just a computer enthusiast like you and I belive there is nothing for you to loose and many things for you to gain in sharing this knowledge with me. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
SteveP.S. Thanks again.

How to obtain top search engine placement? That is the computer world equivalent of "What is the meaning of life?"
It's not an easy, follow these steps, 1,2,3 thing. Do a search on search engine placement and you'll find plenty of sites that discuss this topic.
For $200 or so, you can get a program called Webposition Gold 2 that will help your thru the process.
For $1000 or more, you can hire a company that will attempt to do this for you.
It's not an easy task and the 'rules' are constantly changing. Also, the topic of your site effects the challenge. If your's is the only site in the world about generating electricity from decayed mushrooms, then your job will be a lot easier than if you have a site trying to sell computer parts.

Google will take your money and place you at the top.
Or, you will need to be accessed many times from Google (as in thousands - depends on the competition in like rankings) and linked to by many other sites.
Your best chance, as Don suggested, is to specialize.
Welcome to the Google index!

sigh,,, back in the day sites were ranked on thier content and value to the end user by people who wanted their search engine to be the best.
But now, it's all about the money, if you want to be on top you have to pay. The more you pay the closer on top you will be.
The really sad part is, today you might be the highest bidder for the top spot, tommorow some one else will out bit you and your out. I guess republicians have taken over the internet.
