Edit /etc/inetd.conf and add a comment for each service you don't want to have enabled.
If you are using xinetd then you'll have to edit the file /etc/xinetd.conf and the files in /etc/xinetd.d

You may also want to try testing these ports from the outside... if you have internet access on your linux box, you may want to try websites like www.grc.com and have them test your ports.
As for closing your ports... firewall it. iptables works nicely in rh7.1

i just reintalled the original system configuration to my old computer it is a sony vaio im running windows 95 on it but i cannot get the modem to work because it displays a message that another program is running the modem and when i look for what is wrong it says the port is open and i cannot use it what should i do any help would be appreciated
