how to change kde to gnome

You should be able to change it at the login prompt.

You don't say what distro you are running, so I can't be precise. Do you want to change it system wide or just for yourself? The files can change on different flavours of linux. You can check ~/.bash_profile, ~/.xinitrc, /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, /etc/sysconfig/desktop for "DESKTOP=Gnome" and change it to "DESKTOP=KDE"
Or as Charlie says, if you are using a graphical login (kdm, gdm, xdm etc) you should be able to change your session type there.
Summary: how do you change your GUI from say KDE to GNOME in the command prompt in linux. How can i adjust the settings without being in the Graphical user interface. I cant get into my GUI. Linux gets stuck...
