Hi,
I need to edit the fstab file which requires su status. I can log in as an su at the command prompt but the only editor I have available is VI and I never really learned it.
Is it possible to become a su in the GUI? The root password is set in GUI and I have done that sucessfully but I can't log in by using "switch user" at the GUI level.
Thanks

Try nano.
Guess you could become root and run any x based application. Try xedit as root.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you low-branching widely cultivated annual herb Arachis hypogaea of the legume family with showy yellow flowers.

To use your favorite text editor,,, ( I like gedit, ) just type the name of the editor,,
gedit /etc/fstab/directory ???
or being that it's Ubuntu, making sure your sudo, or su,,, root
kate /dir/dir/ ???
Hope it works for you ,,,
MSI 845e mb 1 gb ram and a p4 2.4n running xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!

Thanks guys, nano worked.
I think to get gedit (which is what Ubuntu uses in the GUI) to work in command line mode you have to use some fancy command line options which I could not figure out.

open a terminal command window
In order to do it should just need to
su (enter)
should ask fot a password,
( at least it does on mine, )Password (enter)
and then
type the command

Thanks quacked, my problem was I was working in command line mode using Ctrl-Alt-f1. Using a terminal in the GUI is lot easier!
