With Windows USB devices are supposed to mount and unmount automatically if the proper driver is installed. Under linux this is not always true. Some devices do work but even if they do not always reliably. Sometime you have to mount and unmount these devices manually. I have RedHat 8.0 and 9. My camera works with the USB because it has a Mass Storage Device interface. Even then I have to manually mount and umount it somtimes. One Compact Flash reader I have works with Linux but the other does not. My HP printer seems to work OK.
Some people are using Flash Disks with Linux. Look at this thread for more info: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/archive/18/2003/06/3/63788

I have found that most USB devices will automatically take the first available unused SCSI device....after plugging it in try mounting /dev/sda1 (if your system is pure IDE). On my old mandrake install, KDE even automatically created a desktop icon for my camera!
