How do vmwares work? Can I install kubuntu and then run XP and MSOffice on top of it using some kind of vmware?

Yes you can.

There are many forms of Virtual Machines as well as different schemes to get applications to work.

A virtual machine can simulate (up to almost real time) a copy of a basic machine. A VM is a computer hardware that is simulated in software.

Examples of VM's are VMwares products, MS Virtual PC, QEMU, XEN, BrandZ and a few others.

Now you don't flat out need XP either. You can run MSoffice on Linux or Unix based machines with wine or Crossover office.

You can consider OpenOffice too. See Portableapps.com for a usb based OOO to try on your flash drive.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.
