Hi! I have installed Knoppix and WinXP on separate partitions on my computer. As I installed WinXP, I cannot get the list of startup alternatives to include both Knoppix and WinXP - only WinXP!?

I think that "Master Boot Record" has been written over and that the cure is to install some bootloader..

How do I do?

/Frankie

Thanks CL -

I checked your answer, but I don't understand how I shall do in particular.. I am not that used to Linux or MBR (yet :-)..)

Where can I see which bootloader that Knoppix uses? I can always use the liveCD to get into "Knoppix mode", but not to the Knoppix hd-session. As Knoppix doesn't appear on the startup menu, I can only enter WinXP.

So my problems are that I do not know where/how to look for which bootloader Knoppix hd-session uses (or CD, as it must be the same).. and secondly, that I don't know how to make the necessary file adjustments..

.. hope you apologize - I am a quite "newbie" in these matters :-O

If you are using knoppix then you are probably using lilo as your boot loader. You can use any text editor to edit the config file /etc/lilo.conf....pico and mcedit are both good for beginners. Once the changes have been made you will need to run the command lilo to write the changes to your MBR. NB you will have to be root to do this.

It does however sound as though you have installed windoze after knoppix which automatically overwrites your lilo boot loader with the microshaft one (thanx Bill!). For future reference install windoze first and then GNU/Linux. During the linux install it will detect your windoze installation and automatically create a boot entry for it. Have you made a boot floppy? If so boot off that and just ru the command lilo as root to write lilo back, no need to make any changes if it was working previously. Failing that you can do the same with the knoppix CH (although a little more complicated).
