Comment:

I have an asus a7v133 mobo with onboard sound. I found that the version (and most others I believe) dont support the onboard sound... luckily the asus site has linux drivers. However I have no clue about how to install such a thing.

I downloaded a file containing files:

74audio.2216.gz
74audio.240.gz
74audio.cla22.gz
74audio.hap20.gz
74audio.mdk80.gz
74audio.rht71.gz
74audio.(other rht [redhat?] varients)
74audio.rfg10(and another with 20).gz

First thing first... they are all for the same card, how do I know which one to use?

Secondly how do I install one of these drivers? I tried unpacking them and i get files like:

modconf
soundcore.o
viaudio.o
vinstall
vunstall

Where do I go next?

Lastly if you know how I can kill xwindows without logging out and/or getting rid of graphical logins that go straight to xwindows plz help me out on another post.

What linux distro are you using ?
The different packages you mentioned are probably
for different distros.
( rht - red hat, mdk - mandrake, etc )
The vinstall looks like a binary installer, though I
can't be sure.
Isn't there a README in the archive ? Normally
there should be.
Anyway, if nothing else works, you can always
manually modprobe the binary driver (.o)
AFTER you copy it to
/lib/modules/[kernel-version]/kernel/sound/drivers
You can get [kernel-version] by
# uname -r
at the command prompt.
Just substitute the output in the above path.
Now you do
# modprobe soundcore
# modprobe viaudio

Once this is done, run
$ /sbin/lsmod | less

Both the modules you inserted should show up.

If this works, hopefully you could try playing some
music to see if it works !

Cheers
