I wish to be able to use write root tty1 from SSH or anywhere else but it says its not enabled. How can I go upon enabling/disabling this?

Go into your favorite run level editor and change runlevel 3 (if you boot into a shell) or runlevel 5 (if you boot into Xwindows/FreeX86) to run writed at boot.

If your actually having a problem with file permissions use chmod to modify the permissions on write (i reccomend "733" (I think that would work))

and btw you CAN use write from tty1

What is that suppoed to mean? I doubt anybody would hack into his system just to read and execute the write command, and what would be the worst outcome? oh, no somone is messaging me! It's a lot easier to set write up that way, which was the default when I installed redhat, then to explain how to ensure the proper user group.

Yes - how dull that would be.... perhaps we should overwrite the now world-writeable (733) write binary with something more interesting.
