My machine boots up in command line mode.

How can I get a desktop?

As root, try switching to run level 5 (telinit 5). Run level 5 is the level on which the GUI loads. You should get a GUI log in screen.

If you do not get a GUI log in screen, as root try configuring Xorg (Xorg --configure).

for gui mode you can press a ctrl+alt = f 6 or f 5
