Help!!

I have install linux 8.1, Mandrake and the
latest version of Apache server. I'm new
to the linux world and i need more info
about how to set up my own web server so
that it can be access from other machines.

I have linux configured and setup to run on
comcast's cable modem service. I think I
have a static IP because every time i ping
my computer its the same ip#.

I have also registered a domain name and
have the IP address for the domain along
with a primary and secondary DNS
nameservers and nameserver IP addresses.

Does anyone have any step by step tips of
how I can create my web server?

i cannot give you step by step instructions, because it is by far, too complicated, and a lengthy process to get working correctly.

you will need a DNS server on this machine, most *nix users use Bind.

you will need the Apache webserver installed.

Check with your ISP to see if you have a static IP first... My ISP gives me a new IP every month as do most. It usually costs extra to get a static IP

Good Luck!

I'm just now trying to do the EXACT same thing -- i'm sick of paying an ISP for virtually nothing... I, too have Comcast, and although they tell you don't have a static IP, mine has NEVER changed in 2 years. I can already access my site by typing in my IP directly, but I'm still trying to figure out how to get my domain pointed to my IP. I'll keep you posted, please do the same...
