I've never install Linux before so I'm not sure exactly where to start, but basically, I would like to install Red Hat on a system that will also have Win2K. Will the procedure of dual-booting win nt 4.0 and linux work for win2k? has anyone done dual boot of Win2k and Linux? As far as partitioning goes, do i just create a primary partition for win2k and leave the rest unpartitioned for the linux installation? or do I need to create an extended partition and install Linux there?
Any tips..

first create a FAT partition with your HD utility disk or WIN2K install disk. Leave the rest unpartitioned. Install win2k first. Linux installation can create ext2 partition on the unpartitioned space on your HD and install inself there. You must also install lilo to master boot record for selectable bootup to work properly. win2k loader is most likely to ignore any foreign OS.

just to clarify, you mentioned fat.. why not fat 32 is there a hard drive size specification? Does this mean Win2k will only have 2g's of hd space to work with? and the rest is all linux or will I be able to create extended partitions on win2k after the linux isntallation?

Thanks for the advice above.. =)

Sorry for the mistake above, I did mean fat32. You will be able to create extended partition inside the fat32.

P.S: I do not actually run win2k as it is too expensive, I run NT 4.0, everything is fine with triple boot NT, RedHat and Mandrake

Murat... one more thing, say you have a 10 gig drive. how would you partition it for the dual boot. 5 gig primary partition with win 2k the leave the rest unpartitioned and install red hat there?

Heh, I have a 20gig drive all of which is allocated to Linux..:) Can tell I am trying to fill it up..!..:)

Well it depends... on what kind of linux user you are... Most Linux users I know are so called "GURU's" and they do everything on linux, so they need a plenty of hard drive.

A novice Linux users will not be putting lots of applications in their boxes as recent distros come with plenty anyways. So about 2-3 gigs is more than enough for such users. Personally, I wouldn't let Windows eat up my HD..:-)

I have tried to Dual boot Win2k Pro and Linux RH 6.2 and had no success. I installed lilo to the first sector of my /boot partition and that didn't work (surprize). Then I installed it to my master boot record and that don't work either. In both cases the boot disk does nothing but light up and hang while Win2k eats it up and starts. What am I doing wrong.? Is it even possible to dual boot Win2k and Linux RH 6.2.

Screw Windows!

I have in the past Multi-boot'd winnt4, win9x, and slackware. I have recently been messing with dual-booting win2k and slak on my laptop w/ no success.

The methods for convincing nt4 and linux to co-exist peacefully do not seem to work with win2k.

I use lilo, and at this point am considering trying out different boot managers. I may be that we have to wait for the next release of LILO to see the situation resolved.

I have to ask Murat, but *why* would someone triple-boot WinNT, RedHat and Mandrake, rather than dual-boot WinNT and have one install of Linux? You do know that Linux is Linux, right? you can copy the kernel file from one to the other, and get the same results if they have differing kernels...

Just confused...
