I have a ESS 1688 sound card and I tried some linux flavors. In any one I use Sound Blaster compatible and it works well. (since Red Hat 5.1) If you use a Red Hat based distribution use "setup" to configure your sound card, logged as root. When your sound card works, you can heard Linus Torvalds saying the right pronunciation of Linux... Enjoy
