Im using redhat 7.3 and simply cannt
unpack a ,tgz file?!!@# Ive read the
instructions from many websites and still
get "file or folder not found" and "command
not found" arghhhh..... I know the file
exists because Im looking at it. Its a new
printer driver for my Z22 printer and I've
just about given up.

Shouldn't it be something like .tgz!!! What
exactly did you type at the prompt, assuming
that you are in the same directory where
the file is? (If you want, e-mail me
directly with the name of the file as well.)Lawrence

Not much to go on from your post, but make sure you have the case right. Linux is CASE SENSITIVE. so if the file is *.TGZ, then dont try unpacking *.tgz.
Other than that, what's the name of the file, and what command are you trying to use?

try typing it out and using the TAB key to complete the file BASH should bring up the file. If tar fails then I am thing you download ed in ASCII.

a .tgz is just a short hand for a .tar.gz file (if you don't believe me do 'file .tgz' . You can use tar -xcvf on it or gzip -dc | tar -xvf -

Thanks guys
the gzip -d | filename.tgz did the trick to unpack it and the tar -xvf filename.ter untarred it. different sites told me different things. But this worked. Unfortunately, the Linux driver for my Z22 printer only works with a parallel connection (I currently use USB with my other OS's. I only have one parallel port currently being used by the Biometric fingerprint scanner built into my keyboard. I'll have to get a PCI/parallel card to get the printer working in redhat....bummer ---- but thanks for the help
