greetings, i have successfully installed mandrake linux 8.2 on my system. however, my system hangs and my monitor shuts off when i try to start X.
i have tried all modes of xfree86 and i get the same problem each time. i have tried to use several monitors, and have singled the problem's source to my video card: an ati radeon 7500.
my card works great under redhat 7.3, but i would like to get it working under mandrake. if anyone could offer some help for my problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

make sure you've selected the right driver for your card in your /etc/X11/XF86Conf file

Mandrake installs a "Radeon" driver, which I guess is a sort of reference driver for all Radeon chips. RedHat had drivers for each individual Radeon card (7200, 7500, 8500 etc...) would it be possible to install these drivers in mandrake using the command prompt?
I did check my /etc/X11?XF86Configure-4 file, and it said the RADEON driver was the one being used.

sometimes multiple screens and displays are used. for example you might be running on the "standard vga" setup without knowing. check to make sure that X is loading the config with the RADEON driver

its just a thought...

thanks for the help.
ive read that the problem might be caused by a bug that amd imposes onto linux's agp memory managment.
ill try compiling the latest kernel.
thanks again!
