I am completely new to Linux and have just installed it on my laptop (Advent Celeron 400, 64Mb Ram, 6.4Gb, 12.1TFT). My problem is that it doesn't seem to recognise the display properly - I installed Mandrake 7.02 and it only fills 3/4 of the screen. Also, the windows within linux are too big for the display so it makes linux quite hard to use.

Any help for a novice would be great!

Hardware integration is only second to cutting edge hardware in terms of linux grief...I know, I use an unsupported i810 chipset with Mandrake 6.1 (I know its not cutting edge, its integrated!). Laptops are often v.tricky due to the level of integration involved.
Could you choose an Xserver during install? e.g. one for your NeoMagic (or whatever) chipset? If so you probably need to sort out X86Config - I prefer XF86Setup for this, if you don't have it get it from
www.redhat.com/swr/i386/XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.3.1-49.i386.html. HowTos are at Xfree86 and linuxfaq.quartz.net.nz - good source of info for all sorts!
If not Charles Stross at Computer Shopper recommends a few sites, I hope they are of some use!
First off try www.xfree86.org for news of support on the way. If you need a third party server try Redhat (their XBF project) and SuSE - they both have support projects.
www.xig.com produce commercial servers - maybe worth checking out.
Finally the Linux on Laptops Website is at:
http://physics.open.ac.uk/~rpblake/linux_laptop/

Hope this helps
Delboy:-)

Right Then..!!
Where do i start, i have a Toshiba t4600c laptop that has a base unit that i can dock it too. In this i can add a scsi card/modem/sound ect, so when i'm docked my laptop has extra hardware i can use.
The problem is, no matter which card i have tried, they do'not get recognised by my laptop when Docked to it, It already had a sound/cd-rom controller Card init when i got it, but this "as a standard card to this system" cannot be recognised either..?? The PCMCIA Card seems to be installed,
My questions would be,
1) How do i prohperly setup this laptop + base unit to a docked + undocked configuration..?
2) How do i get the cards in the base unit to be recognised by my laptop as new hardware so i can use them..??
3) There are 2 ISA Slots available in the base unit, can i put ANY ISA card in them, or do they have to be a certain type to work alongside the pcmcia card..??
4) Does windows find the cards automatically "as uasuall" or do they have to be installed manually...??

H E L P....!!!
Many Many Many THX in advance to any-1 who can help me with this unbearable limited resourses i have to put up with.
I NEED SOUND Card-Ide cd-rom controller workin & my SCSI Card installin.

Carl
