I'm gonna be installing a personal
webserver on an old box... but, have a
couple questions/problems....

first, This is being hosted off shared
dialup network connection... from a winXP
machine

(diagram below)

((InterNet))
\/
((WinXP Box))
\/
((RedHat Box))

first off.... is there any good way of
getting apache/whatever else to send
someone logging onto ip, automatically to
the redhat box (I've got apache installed
on the winxp box... and is detectable from
other locations)

2. Is there a way/how can i update the
website from different locations
(basically, something like cpanel... or ftp
upload/modding)

3. yes... i know that the bandwidth is
going to be about a full 2kbps at best...
just need to have mobile access to files...
not even secure for that matter...

4. Is there even a way to do all this fully
open source/free.... or with an ftp server
type thingy....

5. yes... probably the wrong topic/forum...
but couldn't think of where else to put
it/this

6. PLEASE FORGIVE ME OHH GREAT FORUM
GODS!!!

Try some firewall frontend like;

http://www.ipcop.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/IPCop/WebHome
http://e-smith.org/
http://www.smoothwall.org/

I have never used E-Smith, but prefer IpCop over Smoothwall.

Do some resaerch on those. They should work well.

1) What you are requesting is more to do with firewalling than the apache webserver. I am unsure about windoze firewalls but you should be able to use IP fowarding/masquerading.

2) You can set up a simple FTP server to achieve this or use a more secure method like SSH (Secure SHell with SCP: Secure Copy Protocol).

3) If all you want is to have remote access to your files, just set up SSH and carry around a copy of PuTTy and WinSCP for windoze (they are free) on a floppy disk (most linux distros have SSH tools already installed).

4) Yes, the above methods are all free.

Just a thought, but I'm sure most people would have set up their network as:

((InterNet))
\/
((RedHat Box))
\/
((WinXP Box))
