Please help...this is driving me nuts ;o)

I have partitioned my 40Gb HDD (using DOS fdisk) as follows;

1: ~10Gb FAT32 with WinME
2/3: ~20Gb FAT32 split 50:50 into two logical drives
4: ~10Gb Free space (intended for Linux)

OK, so I'm trying to install Redhat 7.2 from CD-ROM. In the 10Gb of free space, I wanted to have 3 partitions as follows;

1: root ~8Gb
2: boot ~50Mb
3: swap ~1.5Gb (~3x my RAM)

So, disc druid lets me create the first two partitions, but won't let me create the third...no matter which order I do them in. It gives no explanation, just says it can't do it. It's not a space issue as I've tried reducing the root size way down. Even the automatic partition option throws up the same error.

Is it possible I've got too many partitions on this disc or something? Any other ideas?

Help me so I can escape (at least partly) from the evil influence of Bill Gates!

go for graphical installation (option 1 hit enter) and go for manual partition (select no. 2)

You do not neet /boot for rh7.2. /swap and / will do the job.

You try to install more than four primary partitions, and this isnt something billy did do wrong, but you cant create more than four. If you want this you have to use extended partitions. In this way ( you have to completly reinstall your computer ) i would recommend the following

using fdisk under linux :

create in the following order :

1 /boot parition 50 mb (at first of the HDD because of lilo/grub cant boot above 1024 cilinders)
2 Fat 32 partition for winme 10 G
3 extended linux partion 10 G
4 extended windows partition

In 3 , create a
/root about 10 G minus swap
/swap (about 256 Mb is enough, 1,5 G is too much)

In 4, create a
1, 10 G drive
2, another 10 G

Save and format the Fat partions under windows.
Rule : no more than 4 primary partitions
In an extended partition, you can create up to 15 logical drives.

Succes

just to make sure you noticed on what metalpower said, you DO NOT need near 1.5gig swap. the 3x your ram is for up to 98mb ram, after that you can stay at 256 or drop to 150mb since your physical ram is most sufficient. if you have 512mb ram or more, you probably wouldn't even need a swap partition
