Help! My system is down

I tried upgrading from Ubuntu Hoary to Dapper and now my system has hung. I get this message when I try to boot:
I cannot start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
Then the system hangs. Even the keyboard doesn't respond. What do I do?

You could try running setupx from the command prompt.

How do I get there? Like I said, my keyboard freezes. Is there a key I press before the system boots?

At the boot prompt you want to boot into runlevel 3 (text only). Are you using grub or lilo? You want to try and add a 3 to the command line to boot.

Er...if your X server is broken you wont be able to run xfce either.
At the grub prompt press "e" to edit the command and add a "3" to the end of the line. Then press "b" to boot. This should get you into text mode. From there run something like xorgconfig to fix your X server and test it with startx.
