OS: RH 7.2 and Win 2K
CPU/Ram: PII-500 MHz/256
Comment:

I installed RH 7.2 and I have a Aopen cd-952e/akh.

I can't access the cdrom, I tried to mounted without success. I tried to config the kernel no success. Every time a double click on the cdrom icon I get the following :

"could not mount device"
"mount:/dev/cdrom is not a valid block device"

I checked RH supported hardware list a I did not find Aopen cdrom.

The only thing I think is to change the cdrom for a supported one.

Any ideas.....

i don't think that it's got anything to do with the cdrom being aready mounted - that would probably give an fstab error.

it sounds to me like either linux is getting confused with the media in the drive or something has gone wrong with your os link to the cdrom. here is a link to a very long explanation i found as to how to go about fixing this kind of problem. hope it helps.

dmesg|grep -i cd
probably hdb

mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/hdb /mnt/cd

(/mnt/cd/ must exist )

I will follow the instructions on the link you put. However, after carefully looking at the boot messages, I came across several messages saying the following:

"driver failed to intalled cdrom"

Everything is point out that this kind of cdrom is not supporte by RH.

Is it possible to find another driver for this cdrom that works with RH?

Thanks

this CD has an ATAPI IDE Interface. It should work under linux.

How did you install?

I don't know how to answer your question.

However, I can tell you this:

The cdrom is in the IDE2 as master. The hard drive is in IDE1 as master as well. Yesterday, I bought another cdrom thinking that red hat does not support that cdrom. I bought a sony CDU5211. Now I am getting the following message:

"hdc: ide cdrom setup failed to register device with the cd-rom drive"

More problems with a different cdrom. I am thinking to change from RH to Mandrake...

any ideas on this?

how did you install redhat if redhat can not read your cd?

try changing the drive to IDE1 as slave (remember to set the jumper). This will make it hdb. No particular reason for this, but my cdroms have always been this way.

I use Mandrake and RH7.3 on 2 computers. I have never encountered a Linux distro that did not work
with an IDE ATAPT cdrom.
