Hey...
I just installed Fedora Core 1 on my comp along with winXP (dual boot)...and use GRUB as a boot loader.
I want to install My Alcatel speedtouch USB ADSL modem on FC1, and i researched a lot and obtained a good how-to. But the problem is tht in the how-to it says i have to update my kernel to a USB compatible one...and i have no idea how to go about it. I went to kernel.org and downloaded the stable version of 2.6, and then i read a how-to...butits so confusing!! Cant i install a pre-compiled RPM kernel instead?? I went to http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.6/RPMS.kernel/ and was gonna download an RPM but....there are around 5 2.5 kernels, how do i noe which one to download and install?

After i get the kernel installation out of the way, ill be able to continue setting up my modem....so i really need help.

thnx.

The how-to may well say you have to upgrade to a USB compatible kernel but it is probably old and out of date. Provided your kernel is at least 2.4.18 you may not need to do anything.

You should already have USB support and the only thing that might be a problem is the module 'n_hdlc'. Try (as root) the command: 'modprobe n_hdlc' and if there are no errors you are in luck.

hello, thanks for your reply.

After following ur advice, i checked my kernel, and it indeed was USB compatible. i tried to get my peedtouch working, but still cudnt. So i deleted my linux FC1 partition completely. Downloaded the new Mandrake 10 official, and installed that instead. Now usccefully installed, it refuses to run in that either. Everytime i try to config it, it says "sorry u need kernel 2.4 or higher" and mandrake 10 is running kernel 2.6! (and 2.4).

Please can u help me config my modem under mandrake 10? thnks in advance.
