i have installed an internal PCI modem ... PCTEL HSP56 Micromodem and compiled the drivers and also added an entry in rc.local to load both pctel.o and ptserial.o at startup. i use kppp to dial. The connection is no problem. but whenever i try to open a website in navigator (4.75) i always get a cannot find server message. The dummy interface (127.0.0.1) is accessible like it should. I ran pppd and got lines and lines of garbage. had to open another virtual console and kill it. i can telnet to my isp's IP address and it prompts me for my username and password. i have even renamed the ip-up script to prevent it from starting with pppd. still doesn't work. xhost + allows free xclient access but doesn't work for the connection. i disabled the allow isp to assign hostname and it still doesn't work.
damn thing is getting on my nerves. I hand edited the resolve.conf file to include my ISP's IP address as a DNS server and added another DNS server IP address and it still won't work. I have a feeling it is something very simple but i can't quite put my finger on it yet. Can anyone help me out here. and while we're at it ... i've heard that the compiler system of RH Linux 7 is broken. seems that way since i tried to do a kernel compile and i get thrown out of the compile at the make bzImage stage. got any clues what to do for that too. funny that it manages to compile the modules correctly tho.

I have the same problem only you have gotten further than I have. I can connect fine using knoppix and a home cable network with HP (hewlettpackard-running xp with a winmodem) hooked to net. When I try to set the hp56modem I get NOWHERE. Works fine as long as both machines are running xp but to get on net I have to network one running linux.
Let me know if you find a better solution. Also here is more info.
