Have LAN, but not internet on Linux

I'm a Windows user, who would rather not be :-( Have installed Desktop L/X on Dell laptop. Win XP PC is visible on LAN from Linux!Wow, real easy! But, No internet..name reolution problem, I suppose. I've typed prim. & sec. DNS + DHCP. Can only ping LAN. No HTTP. No problem to HTTP from XP PC. Why is default gateway only available with static IP in Linux, not so in WinXP.
