Comment: http://computing.net/hardware/wwwbo... I just realized I should have put this post in the Linux section. Can any one of you guys offer some input? I'm about to burn a Ubuntu cd. I'm tired of burning cd coasters. Nothing is workin well for me.

Reply: (edit)One common mistake I hear about is that people burn the .iso image as a file to the CD. What you want to do is create a CD from an image. The verbiage may vary, but the idea is similar in each CD or DVD burning program. A common problem is related to the image download. If the download is corrupted, the burn will fail. Get the md5sum for the image from the server where you got the image. Get md5sum.exe from eTree and check the md5sum of the downloaded image file. You can google for 'md5sum' to get more sources. Another common mistake is burning the disk too fast. Just because you have a 48x burner and your media 'supports' 48x, there is no assurance the burn will succeed at 48x. I get the impression that these ratings are full tilt maximums. If you have such a burner, try using speeds about one half to two thirds the maximum rating of the drive or media (whichever is lowest). I have a 48x burner here with 12x rewritable media. I burn at 8x and have never had a bad burn. HTH, Ernie Registered Linux User 247790 ICQ 41060744
