If it tells you to backup your data, you
better do it or it may not come (boot) up
again the next time! How old is your hard
drive anyway? (Let's hope it's not an IBM!)

This happened to me with one of my Western Digital HD40's. You should still be able to copy all the data off of the drive. I hooked mine up as a secondary slave and than copied off of it. Once smart tells you it is toast - it is toast.
