Comment:

I installed RedHat 7.2 on a pc running Win 98 on C, Win2000 on D. I created a partitioned on the D drive and installed Redhat. I also have a 2nd hdd installed for storage and data.
Installation went ok, on boot up I have Grub giving me the option to boot to either Windows or Linux.
The problem is , when it boots to Linux, I have the text screen with Localhost log on option.
How do I get the GUI version of the Linux ?
I also tried to hit 'I' for interactive window but nothing happenes.
What did I do wrong ?

thanks in advance.

The only thing you probably did was select "text login" during install. Use "root" and root's password to log in, then type "startx" and it should put you into the GUI.

Once you are in the gui, open the file /etc/inittab and find the line that looks like:

id:3:initdefault:

If there is a 3 there, then your system defaults to runlevel 3 (text mode). Edit that line and replace the 3 with a 5. The 5 specifies runlevel 5 (GUI login). Save and the next time you reboot...viola. Gui login.

This assumes, of course, that X is setup correctly.

Thanks, Barry J. Grundy.
I did pick GUI mode when I installed it. I installed it twice.
I will try your suggestion to night.
Thanks

Hmm. If it still does not work, then the problem is that your X configuration is wrong, so it tries to boot into X and then dumps you back to a console (text) login. If the above suggestion does not work, let us know.

I logged in as a root. And when I typed "startx" it says "command not found". Where could the "startx" be in? I'm using Linux 7.0.

RSVP!
