I have a note book with xp home edition and wanted to install linux with an external hard (USB2.0)..
After installing, when i started the system.. I am getting GRUB hard disk error..
I want to be able to access either XP or linux from my external drive at BIOS level..

what distro are you using? To do what you want to do, the linux kernel must be compiled with usb support _BUILT_IN_, ie not as module but in the kernel. Also should have the usb mass storage and scsi disk and scsi generic support in the kernel. Then you can set up grub to give something like "root=/dev/sd0" so the kernel boots with the usb hardisk partition 1 as root.
