OS: fedora core 5
CPU/Ram: AMDx2 4200+ 2.2GHz/1GB
Product: pctechonline
Comment:

I recently installed fedora core 5 on my computer, but it wouldn't run the proper resolution for my monitor, despite my specifying the monitor I have. I noticed it said the graphics card (an x1600) was unknown, so i got the driver for it form ATI. It installed itself with no problems, and said something about saving my Xwindow configuration and running ATIconfig, but I wasn't sure what all that really meant, but as it also suggested a restart, I did that, and now linux won't start; when I log in, it gets stuck on the 'loading window manager'. Retrospectively, what I did was quite stupid really, but I'm new to linux and willing to learn. Can anyone tell me what I could do to fix this??
Thanks very much for any help.

hello neal.

Im kind of a newbee my self but Iv had similar problems so Ill give you a few tips that might help.

-Boot your computer
-Press any key to stop the boot up proces in GRUB (where the computer says: booting fedora in 3,2,1...)
-Push "e" to edit the boot command line and add "3" right after "ro" in the boot command line i.e. " kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.17-1.2187_FC5 ro 3 root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet
"
This will take you to Run Level 3, wich means the computer doesnt start in graphical mode.
-Log in as root
-type " cd /etc/X11 "
-type " ls -all "
You should find the "xorg.conf" file and the backup of the same file that has been saved before you installed the graphics driver. The backup is named "xorg.conf.backup"
-move the "xorg.conf" somewhere (or if you know what your doing delete it) and rename "xorg.conf.backup" to "xorg.conf"
With other words type:
mv xorg.conf /home/your-user-name
then:
mv xorg.conf.backup xorg.conf
-type " reboot " to reboot

At least this helped me when I screwed up my xorg configuration, however I have a Nvidia card and Fedora 5, but I suppose it should work the same way on your computer..

Let me know if this helped...
