Could anyone recommend a linux distro that would be good for a beginner? I don't want to be isolated from the shell prompt, or be babied or anything. What I really want is something that will play nice with WinXP and have a fairly fast install/setup process so that I can get on to the fun stuff. Thanks for any help.

Whatever you get, make sure ALL of your hardware is compatible with the distro. Redhat supports less hardware than mandrake.

A good linux os for beginners is Mandrake the partition manager is really easy to operate and I give it two thumbs up. If you have experience with partitions for linux go the Red Hat route.

Redhat had trouble with monitors (not graphics cards)in several 'older' machines. The install was no prob but getting the XWindows to work was a problem several times even when the monitor was in the list of monitors. On the positive side ALL the books are written for Redhat.
I'm working with Mandrake now but there are no books that I can find specifically for Mandrake. All the books are written for Red Hat. Not that there is THAT much difference. The manuals that come with the software a virtually worthless. I tried to use the Mandrake web site for help but it isn't very user friendly IMHO. How bout downloading it off the net somewhere and burn your on CD's?

I am no linux expert! But
I have tried suse,red hat,deb,freebsd,
slack ware,peanut 9.2. some I couldent even
get to load. my favorite..

Thanks for the suggestions. I have taken a look at Mandrake, and the wider compatability appeals to me. That's especially so because I tried Redhat (6.x, I think) once before but couldn't get Xfree86 to work properly with my vid card (Voodoo 5). I have *plenty* of experience with partitions. Anyway, I'm going to take a closer look at the latest Redhat and Mandrake distros before I make a decision. Of course, my personal favorite distro will always be Tom's rtbt. :)
Thanks again!
