ok here is what i want to do. In an effort to actually learn something besides windows, I want to run gentoo as the main OS and run xp media center in vmware so i can still play my games :). call of duty HL2 UT2004 and the such.

hardware is....
amd64 3500
2 gig mushkin hyperX 3500
dual 6600 gt pci-e
asus A8N-SLI
raptor 36 gig
maxtor 250 gig.

Am i going to still get the desired framerates here. is the system beefy enough? or will i have to boot into them seperately?

I play games so I can kill you without going to prison or hell!!!

Running graphically intensive games such as HL2 and UT2004 under vmware is probably not the best idea due to the virtual graphics card that is used. A much better way would be to run cedega (formally called winex) which is a version of wine designed specifically for games. Wine allow you to run windoze software under GNU/Linux without the need to emulate an entire PC. You can see how well certain games run in the database on their website (www.transgaming.com).

A better solution still would be to get a native GNU/Linux version of the game....

HL2 runs under cedega, and UT2004 has a native Linux version. I think it even shipped on the same CDs as the Windows version. Otherwise some games like Doom III have binary downloads from the conpany web site.

Hardware accelerated DirectX and OpenGL games won't work at all in VMWare.

nVidia generally has excellent driver support. They even provide 64-bit Linux dirvers. PCIe should be supported, but I don't know about SLI.

In Gentoo I think you can just type
emerge ut2004
And you will have the Linux version of UT2004 installed.

Use the web the way it was meant to be used. Get Firefox.

TazG is right, but you still need the CDs or DVD for the game files.
