Check out xine (which comes with most Linux
distribution).

Mplayer is nice. XMMS also has the avi4xmms
plugin too.

another vote for Xine, out of the box it'll play avi's,mpegs, music... and with the codec divxs

Xine or MPlayer, MPlayer only if you also need wmv support.
