hi, i want to compile gnome 2.0 from source and i don't know what packages to download.
1) what all is needed to get a fully functional (minimal) gnome desktop?
2)In what order should the packages be compiled in order to satisfy dependencies?

The easy way:
1) Install Gentoo
2) type 'emerge gnome'Seriously, you are the one who wants the ultimate tuned Linux machine, you should be telling us what to do!
Also, you'll get results a lot quicker if you use Google, or just blind typing in URLs. For example:
Go to the Gnome website. Look for the link which says "Get Gnome". Then you'll see that it says "Please read release notes for detailed installation instructions and information on this release.", and so click on "Release notes" and read the section about Installation.
Building your own system is an excellent idea, as you will understand far more about Linux and Unix in general, but if you are going to do so, you are going to have to expect to put in plenty of time reading and learning about it all!
But good luck, and in the future you'll be telling us how to do it all.

oh duh, the website was the first place I looked. It has some information on how to compile using GARNOME but i don't want to do that. I want to compile all the packages manually. I found a link to the gnome support forum and i checked it out, But why post on a forum other than this?:-)
So anyone compiled gnome from source?

oh yeah!
the ultimate tuned linux machine...I built an LFS system with the optimization levels right up to -06! The system sure rocks.
But i don't have xfree or a WM. I have a dialup connection and i'll have to download the huge sources :(.
