If the drive in question is the master drive, (remove the secondary drive if applicable, just for safe measure) and use a manufactor's drive check/formating floppy, e.g. Maxtor's Pawermax. to format the disk.

After formating, get a windoze bootable floppy disk and for 98/Me, at the prompt, type in fdisk /mbr to erase the master boot record. I believe with XP, you can boot up with the installation CD and type in FIXMBR after selecting the repair option.

Or,the EASY way (yes linux can be easier than windoze!), is to boot up with Mandrake Instalation CD 1 and go though the installation until you get to the partitioning section and select the custom partitioning and MAKE SURE that the hard drive you want to clear is selcted (hda tab for master drive for example) and hit the clear all button. Then hit done and when the installation tells you have to select a rot partition...blah, blah, blah, hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and you will exit the installation.

Then as above, you need to overwrite the mbr with either a 98/Me or XP floppy/CD. Then partition/format and set the jumper to slave and install.

Just out of curiosity, were you having problems booting your pc?

If so, and not to change your mind or anything, the linux community probably could have solved and help you fix whatever that wasn't functioning correctly.

I quadruple-boot and haven't had any problems that couldn't be solved by my own persistence then finally asking for help when I was at my wit's end.

Remember that *nix has a higher/steeper learning curve and to master the O/S (which I'm long far from) takes dedicated persistence and patience.

Hope you give *nix a try again.

I thought I'd try it out. It wasn't as impressive as I thought it would be. Being new, I wanted Windows as my main OS and since I couldn't get an answer to how to change the boot order so Windows is first, I decided to get rid of it.

Maybe I'll try again on a dedicated machine.

The thing I find that's so great about linux is the ability to change practically anything you want and configure to your needs. That being said, I too agree that a straight-default install is not that impressive, but once you have installed, configured and tweaked it to your needs, I find it more than satisfactory...I still get amazed at the power linux beholds.

For future reference, concerning getting windoze to boot first, either:

GUI
1) Open a terminal and su to root and enter 'drakboot'
2) Click the 'configure' button
3) Click 'Ok'
4) Highlight your windoze entry
5) Click 'Modify'
6) Check/tick 'Default'
7) Click 'Ok', 'Ok', 'Ok'

CLI
1) Open terminal and su to root
2) Type 'vi /etc/lilo.conf' (without single quotes)
3) Hit the 'i' key to insert
4) On line four, change the 'default=linux(or whatever)' to 'default=windows(or whatever your windows label is)' . You may have to scroll up
5) Hit 'ESC'
6) Enter ':'
7) Enter 'wq'
8) Type 'lilo' to rewrite

Either way, windows will boot first.
