I'm a proficient Windows user who has been allowed to install Ubuntu 7.1 on a secondary hard drive. No problems there;it installed smoothly and works excellently.
My problem is : my original Windows configuration was with a ATI 3D Rage Pro PCI card, but I had to revert to the HP's onboard video (Intel 82810E graphics controller) in order to install it. Currently, if I disable the Rage and reenable the onboard video in Windows and in BIOS, I can boot successfully to both XP and Gutsy. If I try using the Rage, I can only boot to Windows - get an X server error when attempting to boot into Linux. So, I revert to the onboard video (24-bit color in both Linux and Windows) and things are back to square one.
That being said, I'd like to use the PCI card for both installations, but have Googled the problem without results. I've seen pages where Linux power users have stated that they've gotten the card working, but none have listed steps how. Probably easy for them;not so much for me.
Sorry if this is a basic question or one that's been asked before. I am obviously very new to Linux, to this distro in particular and in general.
Thanks in advance for any help that anyone is willing/able to offer.

I am not reeaal ,,, sure on this,,, With either Nvidia or ATI ,,, there are what are called proprietary drivers for their video cards and may require them to be installed,
You'd be able to download them from the Manufactures site,,, OR <<< You may be able to just edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf ? file and place a line in there ,,, ( like I said not real sure, what it may be, )
Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSectionSupposedly you can enable direct rendering and then 3d becomes available,,, Installing the proprietary drivers However ,,, ( as I understand it !!! ) May replace some libgl library files and then the ( free ) open source libraries for reverting back to are gone,,,
If at all possible,,, do a yum install of the drivers, #yum install
A better place to ask may be at the Ubuntu forums,,, ( dealing with fedora myself and the repositories and packages may differ in the naming conventions,,, )
MSI 845e mb 1 gb ram and a p4 2.4n running fedora 7 xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!
P.S. Good Luck huh !! Hope you are able to work things out,,,
The newer distro of Ubuntu may better have a ATI driver for the card,,

Managed to get it working. Ran lspci to get my ATI Rage settings on the bus, then sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Entered the correct bus settings and amount of physical RAM on the card, typed reboot, booted successfully to my default Gnome session.
Thanks for the help, this issue is closed, but I'm sure many more will be forthcoming.
