Hi,

I'm setting up Redhat 6.1 and it won't see my network card. I have a 3Com 3C509B set for IRQ 11 and port 300. How can I tell Linux that there IS an eth0 device, it should use the 3C509B driver, and the IRQ and port listed above? Is there a configuration file I can add an entry to? The hardware detection program fails to find it.

I am experienced in networking and other OSs, but am not very familir with Linux. So if you tell me to change a file or run a program, please don't forget to tell me where to find it. I am eager to get this running so I can set up my cablemodem. Your help is appreciated.

Brandon

You can set up and configure almost anything with linuxconf.

go to networking/basic host information and fill in the appropriate spaces under adaptor1. It should be connected to eth0 and your kernel module id 3c509. Also fill in your DNS server and default gateway. (are you gonna use dhcp?, I had a big trouble getting dhcp to work with my cable ISP, if this is the case, use the IP they have given to y ou as if it is a static one).

Linuxconf should be able to change the networking configuration files and in your next bootup, you should see the message "Bringing up eth0..." If this fails, take a look at the debugging message to get an idea of what is going wrong.

Some cable modems may have difficulty communicating with 3com cards. Check with the ISP to see that your card is ok. If you have multiple NICs, take out the other card and see if that works.

Networking-HOWTO and Ethernet-HOWTO are good documents to start with.

Good luck.

If you're using a 3com 3c509 combo you will probably not be able to configure our NIC in linux.
I've searched for hours and days but it didn't work for me. My solution was to buy another NIC like ne2000 compatible, worked fine for me.
If you manage to configure your 3com, let me know.

I confirm the Response #2, during startup, my 3c509 card is not recognized at 0x300, Irq11
