Gentoo is difficult and time consuming to install, but if you follow the guide, it's not too hard, and you'll learn about your system in the proccess. In the end you'll probably be better off than a RedHat or Mandrake user because Gentoo would force you to know how things work. If you have any touble, the forums are a great resource.
x86 is for 386, 486, Pentium, PII, K62, K63, PIII, athlon, etc. CPUs. Other processors exist that are completely incompatible with x86, like Mac CPUs, DEC (now owned by Compaq, owned by HP) Alpha, and a bunch of others.
Your results may vary, but I get very fast downloads from http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ and http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo

oh thx...i downloaded it form http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo and got the only cd it takes to install (is that rite? only 1 installer cd?) in about 400 kbs a second...not bad speed at all...
