For some reason, when I try to run games (quake 3, tux racer, chromium, and Maelstrom are the ones i've tried) they run really slowly. I've tried changing the display type in quake 3, but thats no help...I can't stand trying to change anything in the other games, i'm impatient. What can I do? Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

What vid card? What are the contents of /etc/X11/XF86Config?
It sounds like you aren't using the correct drivers for your card or have an incorrect setup. GL games require DRI (Direct Rendering) enabled. Otherwise your games run in software emulation mode, which you can guess is rather slow.

its an STB velocity 4400....which is, i guess, like an nvidia riva tnt.
my XF86Config says
# **********************************************************************
# Graphics device section
# **********************************************************************Section "Device"
Identifier "Generic VGA Card"
VendorName "Unknown"
BoardName "Unknown"
Chipset "generic"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "RIVA TNT"
VendorName "STB Systems, Inc."
VideoRam 16384
EndSectioni'm assuming thats the section you were asking about.
Is DRI something that I can download or is it something that is/should already be on my system?
Thanks :)

First up, run glxinfo from within X.
It will give you lots of output, in particular it will say something like this:
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI G400 20010321 AGP 2x x86/MMX
This s the line for my Matrox G400, for which DRI is working. If it isn't working, then you will see a line similar to:
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
Then you know it isn't working.
Unfortunately, I can't help beyond that, as I don't have one of those cards, but someone else surely can, or you could use google with a search like... nvidia tnt redhat 7.3 linux install

You don't need DRI. If it's a TNT, download the drivers from nvida.com, read the README, install the RPMs, and make the required changes to your X config file.

I had the same problem with my GEForce card... Tux Racer was running at 1 fps..
I installed the latest driver from NVidia... and now everything runs smoothly...
