Please help, I have recently installed Linux on a P.C. the idea being my students can ftp their websites onto it. These sites are not to be viewed by the www, unless of course you know the I.P. of it. It's just for the students to learn to upload, create directorys etc. We use a TCP.IP network, I am able to ping to the Linux box but unable to ftp to it, any tips on this please.

HAve you installed a ftp-server, and configured it?
I recommend wuftpd.

You have to configure 'inted' or 'xinetd' (depending on distro) to start the ftp server when requested.
The ftp server itself needs to be configured as well, wuftpd is good as the previous poster indicated.
Also depending on distro, you may have some firewall configuration to do.
If the ftp transfers are *not* anonymous: make sure your 98 users do *not* have blanks in their user names.
