Hi,

I had installed redhat linux 8 under vmware tool but I forgot my root password. I was trying to boot into Single user mode with my GRUB loader. I just did the instructions below which I copied from the posted responses I had read but I can't seem to get to the prompt. Nothing happens when i press "e". It just keeps on loading. I am running linux under vmware tools.

==========================================
GRUB
Select the boot image and then press "e" to edit boot options, then type "single" (without quotes).

Can anyone help me please.
Thanks in advance.

Peach

You can boot off a rescue floppy (like tom's root and boot disk http://www.toms.net/rb/) or a live CD (like knoppix http://www.knoppix.org/), mount your root partition and edit /etc/passwd. Look for the entry for root, remove the "x" from that line, eg:
root:x:0:0::/root:/bin/bash
becomes
root::0:0::/root:/bin/bash
Now save the file, reboot and now root will not have a password. Don't forget to assign a password for root straight away with the passwd command.
