hi friends,
i have redhat linux8.0 box with GRUB loader.
but last week before when im going tour i had changed my root passwd. now i forgot it.. so pls help me how to break it..thnx in advance
tagore

Boot into single user mode by typing:
linux 1
(or possibly linux single)
at the grub prompt (try pressing ESC if you are only presented with a graphical menu). This should get you in as root, then simply use the passwd command to create a new password and reboot normally. There are other ways too if you have a boot disk....but the above method is the simplist.

thnk u very much 3dave for ur quick response.
but im sorry to say that how to enter in single user mode..
where do i type linux single.. what i do to get the prompt to type linux single...
my system is dual boot with redhat linux8.0 and win98
when i switched on my system its showing
linux dos
even when i pressed ctrl+x nothin is happening.
thnx in advregards

At the point where it gives you a choice to boot Linux or DOS, rather than using the cursors or pressing enter to continue booting can you type anything in? If not (eg you are presented with a graphical menu) try pressing ESC first to bring up a prompt.

hi 3dave,
thanx for ur patience. but again im sorry to say this,
it shows graphical selection
redhat linux
dos
here i pressed ESC, but nothin wa happened. my system is not respondin.down, sayin that press up arr, down arr select any one of the os and press p for passwd, but i didnt set any passwd for bootloader.
when i press enter directly goin to multi user askin passwd.
tell me any other way to break, is it possible to break thro boot disk, if so how to create boot disk and what to do next? pls
pls help me
coz im very new to linux. pls help me to work on it.regards

OK, are you talking about a password for your bootloader or for your root account once the machine has booted?
It sounds like you might be using grub as a boot loader as opposed to lilo. I don't use grub myself, but I think you use the "c" key instead of ESC to get a command line.
Do you have a boot disk?
