My machine is linux Red Hat 8.0 server. I have selected a graphical interface as a default. How to break the root password. Pl. help. Tell me how to come to the prompt to type the linux single for the single user mode.
LILO Press ESC to get to the command line and then type "linux single" (without quotes).
GRUB Select teh boot image and then press "e" to edit boot options, then type "single" (without quotes).
An alternative to typing single would be to pass a runlevel with init, eg: linux init 0 = halt linux init 1 = single linux init 2 = multi user linux init 3 = networked linux init 5 = graphical networked linux init 6 = reboot Don't use 0 or 6 or your machine will shut down after booting! "linux init 1" would be the same as "linux 1" or "linux single".
