I'm using Mandrake 8.1. While booting, I see "Floppy /dev/fd0 in use" and I can't ever access the floppy. When I try to mount it, I get something like "Error, no such device". I found info on the Mandrake site that said to boot up with the "nonbiospnp" command at boot, but I have no idea how to do this. Any ideas? (By the way, I installed Red Hat 7.1 on the same machine and this doesn't happen in Red Hat.)

open up your /etc/lilo.conf (as root) and
in the commandline parameters (options?) line, add nonbiospnp under

to find it easier, it's under the linux entry, there's only about 4 lines under that

also search www.google.com for 'linux boot options' or 'linux boot parameters' or some documentation on lilo

They probably mean that u should put 'nonbiospnp' in the append="..." line in /etc/lilo.conf, If u're using the lilo bootloader,

OR

if u're using grub then, see which one of these files u're system has:

/boot/grub/menu.lst
(or)
/boot/grub/grub.conf

Here, after the "title" line u will see a "kernel" entry that may look like:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.9-21 ro root=/dev/hda6

just try tacking on 'nonbiospnp' to the end of that line like so:

kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.9-21 ro root=/dev/hda6 nonbiospnp

Now, I am not sure what the kernel parameters are and if nonbiospnp has to be set in the form xxx=nonbiospnp or maybe even nonbiospnp=xx..

So if anyone else here knows this pls post u're views.

In case u want to try it however, Please make sure that u have a boot disk handy for u're system so u can reverse any damage this option does. It's definitely worth trying though.

Kannan
