(This is a reply + solution to a closed thread.... stupid forum, it's not that old!!)

Ernie fails to explain the problem:

By default Fedora uses GCJ to run java programs. And for some reason the GPL java version included in Fedora Core (gcj) does not seem to work very well with Azureus.

Symptoms include 0 KB/s drops and random crashes /lockups.

First of all you need to install a non rpm version of JRE preferably the latest. After installation you have to set this 'real' JVM as the default option in your alternatives configuration. Have a look at fedorafaq.com. My preferred option is to install galternatives. The Gnome gui for the alternatives system. It's included in the extras repository.
Secondly I would advise you to edit your azureus shell script startup file. (the executable you run to start Azureus: it's plain script) and set the Xms and Xmx to at least 128MB

One note. I'm always having trouble with the Azureus version included in the extras repo. I prefer to manually install it to /opt/azureus (just untar it) and add a symlink in /usr/bin

Good luck! Jeroen
