Comment:

I decided to venture into the world of Linux and I did a lot of reading before proceeding with installing Fedora Core 6. I downloaded the DVD iso and did the checksum - everything went fine. I ran anaconda and installed ATI Radeon drivers from RPM.LIVNA.ORG. The install appeared to go fine.

Now when I boot the system, my monitors (i have dual monitors) both say no signal. When I press Alt+Ctrl+f1 I am able to go into terminal mode. I'm also able to boot into init 3.

I will continue to try and fix the problem but any other help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot

I have heard that some people are having problems with drivers provided by Livna. To get you going (at least minimally) I suggest you try logging in as root to run system-config-display select the vesa generic video driver and then generic LCD or CRT monitor with your resolution. After this information is stored you should be able to enter startx at the terminal prompt to start xwindows (Linux GUI.) Also, you can download Linux drivers from the ATI website and install them. If you want to manually "tweak" driver settings the file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf. In this file among other things, you can enter the exact refresh rates supported by your monitor. I'm sure if you do a google search on editing xorg.conf you will find many explanations of the entries in that file.

HaroldW - thanks again for the post. quick question - you said that you have been hearing about this problem. May I ask where? I'm trying to gather some good fedora and red hat sites to put in my favorites. Thanks

Just an update - I did check my xorg.conf file and it turns out the "Device" did have two entries. Videocard0 and vesa were entered already in there. I made a backup of my xorg and then tweaked it. Whenever I tried to do startx i got errors (because I tweaked the xorg.conf). Well, i restored the backup and am back at square 1.

Quick question - system-config-an actual program? I tried running it and there was no luck, then I googled it and couldn't find an answer to my quetion. thanks again for all of the help.

system-config-display is an actual program (All lower case letters and those are dashes in the program name.) It is available in Fedora Core 6 and at least in previous versions it ran with, or without XWindows running. It should be in the /usr/bin directory (it is on my core 6 installation.) Try changing directory to that directory, looking for it and if it is there running it, preceding it with "./"

I just did a Google search on system-config-display and got 89,900 hits.

Also, in the xorg.conf file make sure there are separate "Device", "Screen" and "Monitor" sections. Make sure the refresh rates in the "Monitor" section match your monitor. If the refresh rates are different that could be causing your problem.

In addition to vesa you can try "vga" and "radeon" for video card driver filenames.

When I have some time I will try to find the post(s) I saw about the Livna drivers (I frequent a number of forums.)

Harold

How about trying to install the drivers direct from the ATI website? You will probably want to use the flglx driver if you can for full hardware acceleration....

Thanks - I ran the system-config-display (the reason I couldn't run it before was because I didn't know it was in a particular folder - my bad for wasting your time on that one). I also was missing the monitor section in my xorg. I added that and the startx worked! Thanks so much.
