Comment:

I loaded Mandrake 9.0 onto a clean hard disk from CD rom, and the set up seemed to be fine. But when I tried to reboot after finishing the installation, all that happened was that after the diagnostics the character L then number 40 filled sequentially every line on my screen. Anybody help? Otherwise I'm back to Windows!

You got me! GRUB, I think (I seem to remember that word swirling past during the installation). I chose the 'Create Boot Loader' option in the set up.

Sorry, I'm not a techie, so you'll have to excuse my lack of precision.

Sorry - don't understand. Basically my position is this; I bought Mandrake 9.0 as a free distro. Although it said I should be able to boot up from the CD Rom, I couldn't. I did however make a bootup floppy which allowed me to install all the stuff on the CD Roms. It took nearly two hours, but whizzed away happily, and congratulated me at the end for successfully loading Mandrake. But it won't boot up from the hard disk, only producing the error I mentioned. Yes, the bios is set to boot from the hard disk! I am now going to try and use the 'rescue' function which I am told by the distro mag is on the cd rom. Can't understand this repetition of '40' all over my screen, though I suppose it must mean something.
So here I go again 21.40 BST!!

The 40 L's are produced as an error by lilo.
Can't remember exactly what it might mean,
depending on where lilo stops (eg L, LI or
LIL) means a different error.

Did you make a boot floppy during
installation? Boot from that if you did.

To use rescue mode, insert the Mandrake CD
and boot off that as you did to install.
When presented with the "Press enter to
install or TAB for more options"
(well...something like that), press ESC and
the screen should change to text mode. At
the prompt, type rescue and follow
the prompts.

If you finally get into your system, you can
use "mkbootdisk" to create a floppy for
future use and you could also then reinstall
lilo/grub by typing "drakboot". If you are
having prolems with lilo, try grub instead.
