I have a Compaq Armada 3500 laptop that runs linux very well... except for the audio. The SuSE kernel comes with the driver for the ESS 1869 AudioDrive, however straight up modprobing doesn't work, and running YaST does the same thing... telling me that i have invalid parameters. I got it working ONCE on suse 8.0, but due to a corrupt installation had to reinstall. i have tried EVERY possible combination of parameter values, and it still doesn't work. any ideas?

I have one of these, but in a desktop and isapnp sets it up automatically.
For what its worth, mine is currently working with 0x240, irq 10, dma1 1, dma2 3
You should look through some of the files in /proc, probably interrupts, iomem, ioports and dma for spare slots and then use this as arguments later.
Also, try the Alsa drivers as they support more features of this soundcard. (ie, hardware mixing of two channels)
