A friend of mine has bought a new Acer Laptop with Linux OS and he would like to replace the OS i.e. Linux to Windows XP!

He tried to run the Windowx XP CD to overwrite the systen but it didn't work. Does anyone knows how to ERASE LINUX SYSTEM AND REPLACE IT WITH WINDOWS XP?

Appreciate your input on this.

There is a recommended way of deleting the boot manager that may have been placed in the MBR,,,

fdisk mbr should work with some DOS boot disk,,,

I usually go to the extreme and just zero fill the drive,, eliminating all partitions and then trying,,,

MSI 845e mb 1 gb ram and a p4 2.4n running fedora 7 xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!

Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the CD-Rom first and not the Hard Disk.

Why didn't it work?

Most OEM linux systems offer the simple doc's on how to install xp. What do the user manuals say?

Some systems require that you select a bios option to install a new OS. You'd have to read the manuals to be sure.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Glad to hear Acer's selling laptops with Linux pre-installed. Too bad it's being erased for Windows. I suppose it's a moot point now.

Windows is very aggressive in removing any traces of Linux on a hard drive, Windows XP in particular. Why any bit of the Linux boot loader (GRUB or LiLo) would remain is a bit of a mystery.

Do let us know how the set up is going and what message appears on the screen when booting if XP still cannot manage to remove it.
