As root, "telinit 3"
I presume that you aren't starting with startx: that you have a PC set to boot up with the graphical login screen. If that's the case, telinit3 will take you to the console. To make it permanent, you need to edit /etc/inittab, and change the initdefault setting from 5 to 3.
If you ARE using startx, then just logging out of your window manager should be all you need to do.
