Comment: After using the RedHat Linux 9 as a gateway (Firewall), the local user can not send email but able to receive email with Outlook. The error status is something as follow: The message could not be sent because it rejected you as the sender. Server Response: '550 5.7.1 Access denied'.(Account: 'mail.xxxx.com', SMTP Server: 'mail.xxxx.com', Error Number: 0x800ccc78). I can use Webmail to send and receive mail. If I am using the external IP, I can do it right. Even I use other SMTP, POP3 in the internal network, it works. Do anyone can help to solve this problem??? Here is my analysis, Basically, I can sure that 1) it did not related to client setting ( it is because I am able to use the client to receive mail, even send email using other SMTP, POP3) 2) the user account have sufficient premission to do so. (the user can do it at home.) 3) I think it may be the firewall problem. Because my company use other hardware firewall before, but we just choose to use the Red Hat 9 Firewall in last day Thank You !

Reply: (edit)Do you have to be connected by a specific ISP in order to connect to their mail server? Is the user dialling up via a different ISP when they try from home?

Reply: (edit)sounds like you are using the wrong smtp server, each isp will only allow it's own customers, (ie' ip addresses), to send mail through it's servers. check with your isp to find out what smtp server you should be using.

Reply: (edit)I don't think it is the problem of ISP. It is because 1) I am always able to do so if i use the external IP. 2) My ISP have given my company the right to do so. The only thing I hope to do is using internal IP through the Web Server(2 NICs one for external IP, one for internal IP) to send email. The only different is the webserver have the RH9 firewall. However, I can use some other email server to send email in internal IP. In addition, I think my company email server using non-standard port (not port 25,I guess) Question 1) Would anyone here mind to tell me how can I check which port is my email server using? the email server is sendmail in RH7.1 Question 2) I hope to use other email application in my RH9 webserver so that Web & Email can use in the same machine. Any good Email application will yours suggest? Deep Thank You

Reply: (edit)1) You could ue either nmap or netstat to can your ports. $ nmap 127.0.0.1 $ netstat -a | less 2) sendmail, qmail, postfix....

Reply: (edit)You can probably find nmap on the redhat installation CDs. It's a portscanner. "netstat -a" should work though...it lists all ports that your computer is listening on.
