Subject: editing a root.img file without dd

My friend email me a root.img file
that contains his harddrive and told
me to - dd - it to a partition.

But, my linux machine has crashed for
now and I am re-compiling the
kernal.

I there any way to edit the root.img
file from windows.

Can anyone help ?

correct me if I'm wrong,

You can boot from a floppy then mount the root.img file into your file system. It'll act as if you mounted an actual partition. This still requires Linux, but just a boot floppy. The disk you used to install Linux with should do the trick (assuming you didn't install from a bootable CD).

You may need to mount the partition you copied it to first.
